El nino Effect

                El Nino effect

I came across the term El Nino effect. What does that mean ? Let's see.

El Nino refers to the warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean which can have a negative impact on the Indian monsoon. Recently, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)said that the El Nino phase has returned after three years of La Nina. During La Nina , the temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean falls , leading to better monsoon in India. The Union government had asked states in May to be prepared for the impact of El Nino phenomenon this year.

You will be thinking “Oh what harm will this El Nino thing do to us?” Here is the answer. El Nino can make extreme weather events more likely in certain regions, including extreme heat , droughts , storms and flooding. Flood - related health risks are complex and multifaceted , ranging from hypothermia , drowning , malnutrition and injuries to infectious diseases escalation and mental health problems.

Now your mind voice will be this. “So are humans the only one who suffer ?” The answer is no. Animals are also affected. Elnino reduces the upwelling of cold water off the coast of America . When this happens, fish either die or migrate into areas where they'll find more to eat. With the fish gone, sea birds that depend on them may die or go elsewhere. Kelp forests are often destroyed by storms and ocean swells.

There is nothing we can do to stop Elnino and La Nina events from occurring. So we can be prepared for El Nino by:

  • Registering the cell phone with Alert OC for emergency notifications.

  • Check your roofs for leaks.

  • Clear your gutters and downspouts.

  • Repaint the wood trim on your home.
